Mandala Artist Scarlet Barnett

Artist Statement

Currently based in Naarm (Melbourne), Scarlet is a Bundjalung woman of Palawa descent, a trained yoga teacher and visionary artist.

Scarlet uses her artistic practice as a means of meditation, of quieting the mind and tapping into intuition. This practice enables her to explore the more subtle realms of human consciousness and in doing so create a bridge between her inner and outer worlds.

Through yoga, meditation, dadirri (deep listening) and creativity, Scarlet’s work is centred around the intersection of indigenous wisdom or “inner knowing” and yogic philosophy as it relates to everyday lived experience.

Scarlet uses metallic ink on black paper to bring her visions to life and to draw her audience into the abstract world of vibration, movement and creator consciousness. How can consciousness understand its contents if not for the artist that holds this mirror up to itself? So that it can see itself and in doing so, understand itself and evolve.

The intention behind Scarlet’s dot mandalas is to help heal the divide between First Nations and Colonial Australians, that we may all see a part of ourselves, as a dot or a part of the greater whole, a fractal of the cosmic mandala.

Meet the artist

Pulsation

This artwork points to the subtle energy of the body, that can be felt as a pulsation. In quiet moments of meditation, the pulsation can be felt as a lived experience. Our very aliveness is with us all the time, right under our noses in the rhythm of our breath, and through our veins in the pulsation of our blood and beating heart.

Primordial Aum

This artwork is an abstract homage to the Primordial Aum, the original sound of consciousness. The Aum chant is made up of three sounds, “Ah” “Oo” and “Mm”. These sounds correspond to the three essential qualities of existence: creative energy, operational energy and destructive energy. As destructive energy makes way for creative energy, we see that all endings are also beginnings in the infinite play of form.

Meeting Place

This mandala is an acknowledgment of the common ground between aboriginal culture and the yoga community in Australia. The 8 petals of the mandala represent the 8 limbs of yoga, while the waves and spirals symbolise our shared connection to the natural flow of life and ancestral lineage. Further, each dot represents an individual person, coming together with a shared vision, common values, a common unity - community.

Frequency

This artwork is an exploration of sound vibration as a healing force. The “listener” sits at the centre of the mandala and the spirit of the music swirls around them, creating a sense of unity, harmony and inner equilibrium. Through this sound therapy, of tuning into a particular frequency, the separateness of a distracted mind is put at ease.

Cosmic Breath

This metallic ink dot mandala in bronze, gold and silver, is a celebration of the life-giving force of Breath, and of the animating principle of the universe that gives rise to all things. One of Scarlet’s earliest explorations of the style, this artwork is lovingly created one dot at a time, in a meditative process that allows for the image to slowly reveal itself based on foundational design principles, rather than a predetermined idea of how the artwork should look.

Yaan Circle approved wording for Acknowledging Country

Below you can copy our Yaan Circle approved wording for Acknowledging Country. The most important thing is that it is heartfelt, so feel free to edit the wording on your website's Acknowledgement of Country. You may choose to Acknowledge the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island Country you live and work on rather than the whole of Australia.
COPY THE TEXT BELOW AND USE IT ON YOUR WEBSITE.

Please note that this text will be SHOwn Automatically ON YOUR WEBSITE If YOU USE THE QUICK INSTALL METHOD AFTER purchase.

Acknowledging Country and First Nation Culture and Community

We recognise the continuous and deep connection to Country, of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples as the first peoples of this nation.

In this way we respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of this land, waters, sea and sky.

We pay tribute to the Elders past and present and respect the collective ancestry that has brought us all here today.

It is a privilege to be teaching on Country and we hope that our work here in some way supports true custodianship of this land.

How to find the local Custodians of your area

The Australian Post is working on an online app to find the traditional custodia of your area by ZIP code.
As soon as this is ready, we will provide a link or integration here.

How to set up Acknowledging Country on your website

There are two, respectively three ways to install an Acknowledging Country page on your website:

1. Quick Install
If you purchase a mandala on this website you will also receive a quick install guide which allows a quick set up of a ready to use AC page with your mandala background. If you use this option your mandala and the default text will already be set up and work for all screen sizes without having to upload your mandala image or format text etc. Your AC page set up like this will show once per visitor per day.

2. Manual Install
If you want to have more flexibility to modify text, font, button, color of button or frequency of when the Acknowledge Country page should be shown etc, you will have to opt for a manual install. For this there are again two possibilities:
a) Create a free account with powr.io and create a pop-up page there with your mandala background. This is fairly easy and instructions are available on their website. The free version will show a tiny powr.io logo in the corner of your AC page and it will display on each visit.
b) Create it from scratch within your website platform. We have set up step by step instructions for this option for Wix, WordPress*, Squarespace*, Weebly*

*coming up asap.

Whenever we mention First Nation, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island or Indigenous peoples we are referring to all original tribal peoples from the continent now known as Australia.
